A knocking noise in your car is a common problem that can occur in many different types of cars. This noise usually occurs when the engine is under load, such as when accelerating or going up a hill. Knocking noise can also occur when the engine is idling. There are several common causes of engine knocking noise, and in this blog post, we will take a look at some of the most frequent causes.

The Common Causes of Engine Knocking Noise in Cars

There are several common causes of engine knocking noise, and in this blog post, we will take a look at some of the most frequent causes.

Worn out Spark plugs

One of the most common causes of engine knocking noise in a car is worn out spark plugs. As spark plugs get older, they can become fouled with deposits from the combustion chamber. This can cause the spark plugs to misfire, which will result in engine knocking noise.

If you’re hearing a knocking noise in your car, it could be caused by worn out spark plugs. Over time, spark plugs can become fouled with deposits, affecting their ability to create a spark. This can cause the engine to run less efficiently, and can also lead to knocking sounds.

If you’re hearing knocking when your car is parked, it’s likely that the plugs are the culprit. Replacing your spark plugs is a relatively easy and inexpensive fix, so it’s worth checking them first if you’re hearing knocking noises in your car. Worn out spark plugs should be replaced as soon as possible to avoid damage to the engine.

Dirty Engine Oil

Another common cause of engine knocking noise in a car is dirty or insufficient oil. When oil isn’t changed frequently enough, it can become thicker and dirtier which will cause it to does not lubricate the engine parts as well as it should. This can lead to metal-on-metal contact, which will create knocking noise. Make sure to change your oil according to the manufacturer’s recommendations to avoid this problem.

If you hear a knocking noise coming from your engine, it might be because of dirty or insufficient oil. When the oil isn’t changed often enough, it becomes thicker and dirtier. This makes it harder to lubricate the engine parts, which can lead to metal-on-metal contact and the knocking noise. Make sure to change your oil according to the manufacturer’s recommendations to avoid this problem.

Spark Knock

Another common cause of engine knocking noise is spark knock. This happens when the air/fuel mixture in the cylinders is detonating too early. This can be caused by a problem with the ignition timing, fuel quality, or cooling system. If you suspect that spark knock is the cause of the knocking noise in your car, it’s best to take it to a mechanic to have it diagnosed and repaired.

If you think that spark knock might be causing the knocking noise in your car, take it to a mechanic so they can diagnose and fix the problem.

Piston Slap

Piston slap is another common cause of engine knocking noise. It happens when the piston rocks back and forth in the cylinder due to clearance issues. This can be caused by a worn out piston ring or cylinder wall. Piston slap usually happens when the engine is first started, and goes away after the engine has warmed up. If you’re hearing knocking noise that goes away after the engine has warmed up, it’s likely that piston slap is the cause.

Worn Out Engine Parts

Another common cause of engine knocking noise is worn out engine parts. Over time, engine parts will wear out and become less efficient. This can lead to metal-on-metal contact, which will create knocking noise. If you’re hearing knocking noise from your engine, it’s a good idea to have a mechanic check it for worn out parts.

As engines age, their parts will inevitably begin to wear out. When these parts are no longer able to function as efficiently as they once did, they may cause metal-on-metal contact which creates knocking noise. If you think that your engine might be due for some new parts, please give us a call.

Other Problems that may contribute to a knocking noise in the car are:

1. Worn engine bearings

2. Incorrect fuel octane rating

3. Carbon deposits on the piston or cylinder walls

4. Loose or damaged exhaust system components

5. incorrect ignition timing

6. Worn valve lifters

We will cover these in our next post.

We have been looking for a trustworthy auto repair shop since our auto shop owner retired years ago, we have *not* had a good experience until we found G&G Auto Repair. Hands down these folks are the best, competent, honest, and trustworthy shop that I have run across, these folks are reliable like our old shop. They have done great work on our van at fair prices, and that’s all I can ask for :) They also go above and beyond by texting all repair docs, assessments, and diagnostic results to my phone for review and approval. I really wish I had found them years ago. I highly recommend this shop!

I went to G&G to get my (damaged) oil pan replaced on my Toyota. However, when I got my car back, the technician had over tightened the drain plug leading to the gasket cracking, causing a fair amount of oil to leak out of my Toyota unbeknownst to me until I had gotten home. Fortunately, after a few phone calls, Shaun told me to return the vehicle after I told him the worsening severity of the situation, and my vehicle got promptly fixed after I had bought it back, and I commend them for owning up to their mistake. Overall, it seems they did a good job repairing the vehicle, and it’s priced a little on the higher side but for this state, and the overnight turnaround time it would say it’s more than reasonable. I would come back again.
