When Should You Changing Brake Fluid?

This is a good question because manufacturers are inconsistent on this subject. Manufacturers like Mercedes, Volkswagon, BMW, and Subaru notably require brake fluid replacement every few years. While other brands, like Ford, Chevy, and Toyota don’t include brake fluid replacement in their required maintenance schedules.

Typically you will want to replace your brake fluid if you notice any of the following conditions:

  1.  Brake Fluid Level low:

Just checking the brake fluid reservoir can tell you if the fluid level is low. Spotting underneath the car can typically be a sign that there is a leak somewhere in the brake system. Or, that your brake pads have worn down and are requiring more fluid to increase stopping power. If your vehicle is veering to one side while braking it can also be an indicator of low fluid.

  2.  Dirty Brake Fluid:

Dirty brake fluid colors can vary from dark brown to black color. Bad brake fluid can resemble motor oil and can be hard on the vehicle’s system. If you notice a dark brown or black color in your brake fluid reservoir; consider flushing the system.

Why it’s important:

Brake fluid has the ability to absorb moisture over time. This can come from microscopic holes in rubber hoses and boots, and from condensation in the brake fluid reservoir. As a result moisture in the fluid can lower the fluids boiling point. This, in turn, causes corrosion in the brake system. Because the fluid can potentially boil in extreme braking situations it will reduce your braking force. Prolonged corrosion will damage brake components like the master cylinder and possibly the expensive ABS module leading to costly repairs.

How Much Should a change cost?

Generally speaking, a typical brake fluid change cost can vary between $80-$120. The cost is roughly the same for make or model of car. Brake fluid is a cheap item. A majority of this cost is labor. So, if you have the know-how and are a do-it-yourselfer. You can find a good brake fluid flush kit on Amazon. And many informative videos on YouTube that can teach you how to flush your brake fluid.

When you bring your vehicle in for service at G&G, we test the brake fluid for contamination and if needed we’ll want to replace your fluid. Fresh brake fluid will reduce future repairs and might make your car or truck safer to drive.
