Why is it so important to use the correct oil in when performing an oil change in your car or trucks engine? Today’s vehicles have requirements for low emissions, high fuel mileage, and customers want high horsepower. To meet these requirements modern engines are much more complicated, with internal systems such as variable valve timing. There are actuators inside the engine that are operated by engine oil based on oil pressure. If the correct grade or viscosity of the oil is not used problems with how the engine performs can arise. This could cause a check engine light to come on. We have plenty of examples of fixing a check engine light. Engine driveability problems can be solved by using the correct oil during an oil change.
What can happen if the correct oil isn’t used
If the correct oil is not used the vehicle warranty could be affected. For these reasons, at G&G Auto Repair we always look up the manufacturer’s required oil specification for every vehicle when we change the oil, and we only use an oil that we verify meets that specification. We use oil from a variety of sources. Even popular brands of synthetic oil don’t meet the specifications of every manufacturer. Whether you have your oil changed here or at another repair facility, it’s important that the correct oil is used in your vehicle’s engine.
What should you know about CV joints and axle shafts? Most cars and SUV’s these days are front wheel drive. The drive axle that puts engine power to the front wheels must allow for the tires to turn for steering, and for the suspension to go up and down. This requires the axle shaft to have what is called a constant velocity joint, or CV joint. CV joints have a rubber boot that allows the joint to move but also holds in grease so the joint stays lubricated. Over time this corrugated rubber boot can tear in the seams. Because the axle shaft is spinning the grease will be flung out of the boot through the tear, and road grime will be allowed to enter the joint. The eventual lack of grease and any debris will cause the joint to wear out. A worn out CV joint will normally make a clicking noise while driving when the front wheels are turned for a corner. We always check for CV boot damage when a car is in for service so we can let you know that you have a problem coming up. We normally don’t replace the boot itself, since axles don’t cost very much and it costs more labor to pull the axle apart to replace the boot. Replacing the whole axle is usually just slightly more than replacing the boot, and you get a new axle and new CV joints. So, if you hear a clicking sound while turning, it’s time to get it checked out.
